You're Taking What?

Many people often think I'm against medications which is nowhere near the truth. On the other hand, I am for attention and mindfulness when it comes to their administration. Unfortunately, more ofthen than not, there is little consideration given to everything a patient is consuming on a regular basis. At this point, one could say, when asked, they provide a list of all their medications, in addition to the herbal and vitamin supplements; however, how much time does your health professional invest in putting all the pieces together? In other words, you show up with a concern along with a complete medical history; does your doctor and / or clinician take everything into account or just the immediate report combined with your vitals?

You see, everything matters and more often than not, the prescriptions we're handed do not take the entire picture into consideration. And, to make matters worse, he or she views everyone of your health issues as individual problems rather than indicators all pointing to the same chemical imbalances Nonetheless, by the time we get to needing some of the 'bigger' medications, our health has declined so much so, they medications are necessary. At the same time, they are making matters worse because drug interactions are usually overlooked as are nutrient depletions. Granted, many physicians make dietary suggestions as indicated by the medical boards; however, little, if anything is personalized.

For some strange reason, we've been led to believe that diabetes is same in everyone; or for that matter, high blood pressure, depression, Autism and even addiction. Let me go on record by saying, not one health condition is identical. Oh sure, any number of symptoms can be categorized under one umbrella i.e. MS or HIV because of one or two presenting conditions; however, beyond that, one case cannot be managed with a 'one size fits all' approach. Hence, the numerous medications and ideas on how to deal with any major health problem. Why is this? Because each of us is walking around with nearly 10 million genetic variations (all slightly different) with some causing the immediate problems while others lay silent until triggered by any number of chemicals. In fact, 7+ billion different genomones is the reason why we will never find a cure for any dis-ease or dis-order. The only thing that heals the body is the body itself which brings me back to medications.

The origin of phramaceuticals is rooted in plant constituents. To this day, researchers study the various ingredients and their effects on various genes. Even though many will argue with me about every ailment being tied to neurochemical imbalances, I beg to differ. Every medication I've researched affects one or more of our chemical messenger receptors. Why? Because the essence of plants actually contains their hormones which in turn matches the receptors in the human body. When we apply true plant matter to the body, the body receives the information it needs to produce the correct chemistry for metabolizing and assimilating the necessary nutrients for cell health, tissue development, hormone and neurotransmitter production, cholesterol use, cardiovascular and neurological health as well as immune support. In other words, the body is perfectly designed to protect itself as well as work in sync with nature. However, we are consistenly exposed to chemicals, stress, dietary additives, soaps, artifical aromas, herbs, vitamisn, etc all of which are metabolized by the body. This may sound benign enough; yet, everytime a chemical is metabolized, a secondary metabolite is produced and it is these chemicals that can wreak further havoc on the body without us even knowing about it. Now add pharmaceucticals to the mix, and each of us is a walking chemistry lab. This is why a full assessment of what is being consumed as well as reviewing the family history and any current concerns is incredibly beneficial because, more often than not, those meds are necessary; however, learning how to support the body in order to enhance the results makes all the difference in the world. Quite frankly, in a perfect world where no one had any genetic issues, pharmaceutical research would be all that we needed. Instead, we live in an organic world where everything changes with nearly every breath; therefore, awareness is the key to optimal wellness.

One of the most recent cases is an older gentlemen who suffered a stroke last year. Eighteen months later, he continues to struggle with dizziness and fluid problems. He is being led to believe his problesm are due to his age and the fact that he has had a stroke, and believed to have a sinus infection. Mind you, he was also told at the time that he had COPD, which turned out to be a mis-statement. Fast forward to today, when he provided me with his list of meds and other concerns i.e. slow bowels and drainage from the eyes and ears. As it turns out, he is experiencing a drug interaction, more than likely has several genetic polymorphisms that are also contributing to his inability to fully utilize the meds which is, in turn, exacerbating his issue. (notice I said issue because it is ALL linked) When I finally broke it all down for him, he's taking an anti-histamine, a statin, an anti-platelet along with a beta blocker. Each one is affecting his neurotransmitters and hormones and even though it would serve him to add certain foods to his diet, he is 'forbidden' due to the particular medications. What's worse, the other medications are depleting the very nutrients he is not allowed to consume????? At this time, it is not my place to tell him anything other than the facts and encourage him to visit these concerns with his physician; sooner than later. That said, I can absolutely support him with very specific oil blends that do not have blood thinning properties; yet, support the neuroendocrine system as well as his liver and lymph.

To sum it all up, the severity of a dis-ease or dis-order is directly proportional to our chemcial imbalances. What they are varies from person to person and only detectable when we notice something isn't as it should be. Medications, by all rights, have their place; however, it is important to note they originate from plants which brings me to the question, why not turn to them first.? In many cases, people do; however, not with a full understanding of what's really going on in the body. The human body is an organic mechanism capable of amazing things when given the appropriate tools. And even though, we've been given plants to use, we are not without complications due to technology. For this reason, incorporating the expertise of someone who specializes in understanding these mechanisms takes personalized wellness to new heights!
